Jesus, More Than A Savior

Homosexuality: Is it in the Genes or is it a Choice?

I was reading in James recently and came across a verse that addresses an extremely controversial and for some individuals a very sensitive topic; homosexuality.  It’s like this ongoing debate on whether or not people are born as homosexuals (aka genetics) or if it truly is a choice.  I’ve heard both sides of the issue, but it doesn’t really matter what your side is, my side, or really anyone’s side.  All that matters is what God’s word says about this issue because that is the ultimate truth.  Dig into James 1:13-15 with me

13When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. 15Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

When people place the blame on genetics, they imply or even say straight up that they were “made” this way and “can’t help it.”  In other words, they have no choice.  After reading these verses in James, God specifically addresses this topic.

Verse 13 hits this topic at its core.  When people engage themselves into thinking that homosexuality is not a choice, but genetics….they are simply saying “you know what, I can’t help the way I was made….God made me this way.”  That is the true core argument for placing the blame on genetics.  However, this is contradictory to who God is.  God did not make anyone a homosexual!  It’s absolutely impossible for that to happen because God is incapable of creating sin.  He is everything that is Holy and good and to imply that he creates individuals as homosexuals is saying “because God made me this way, it’s all his fault.”

Verse 14 gives us the real answer,  our own sinful desires! It’s our own sick and twisted sinful minds that entice and drag us away under submission of sin, regardless of what the sin is.  It could be envy, pride, lust, theft, homosexuality….it doesn’t matter which sin it is, it’s OUR evil desires that opens the door for temptation!  I believe that what hurts God the most is that we CHOOSE our sinful desires over Him.  If someone struggles with pornography and falls into its grasp one night, it was his CHOICE that took him down that road, not God’s.  The same goes for homosexuality.  It is not God’s choice to make an individual a homosexual because it is literally impossible for God to do that.  It is essentially the individual’s choice to embrace the homosexual lifestyle over God.

Whatever sin we tend to struggle with always ends in bitterness and despair.  View it like this as depicted in verse 15.  When a couple conceives a child, they are so excited!  They go to the doctor and perhaps see a picture of the baby in the womb and ultimately are filled with joy.  They just know this baby will bring so much joy to their lives.  However, in the end the baby dies before child birth, resulting in a stillborn.

This is a horrificl depiction of sin.  We think a particular sin will bring us so much joy and fulfillment, but ultimately it ends in death.  Sadly, without Jesus Christ in someone’s life it would result in eternal death,  but the point is that it leads to death and destruction, not fulfillment.  Instead of choosing your sins over God, set your focus on the Lord….for He is better.

I’ll leave you with one question.  If you came to the end of your life and were standing before God, how heartbreaking would it be to look back on your life and know you chose the evil desires of this world over God and as a result must spend an eternity apart from Him because you CHOSE to.

Choose God, for He is love!

Is Hell Real? You Bet

Sooo….a lot of times when people hear stories of visions/dreams/out of body experiences, they go straight to “that could never have happened.”  To be honest, I was one of those people at one point in my life, but as I’ve studied God’s word I’ve realized that even though we are in the year 2010, God can do what He wants!  If he wants to show somebody a vision or give them a dream…..maybe even an out of body experience then He could do that.

In the past I’ve tried to limit what God can and can’t do simply because something like that has never happened to me and it may be like that for the remainder of my life, but just because I’ve never experienced something supernatural that only God could have done doesn’t mean it isn’t real.  I’ve never experienced the miracles mentioned in God’s word, but as a believer in Christ I believe that the Bible is the absolute truth.

Any way, I’m rambling on so I’ll get to my point.  My father read a book by Bill Wiese entitled 23 Minutes in Hell and gave it to me once he finished it saying it will change the way I view Hell completely.  I’m not going to lie, I was a little skeptical (like I typically am about things such as this).  However I was intrigued, so I decided to pick the book up and read it, and I have to say I was really impacted, but what struck me most was how the author went back and broke his vision or whatever it was he had down with scripture.  Scripture after scripture after scripture describing Hell.  I left with a sense of urgency more than anything about my friends and others who choose the world over Christ.

Naturally, I looked the guy up on YouTube because that’s what I do and I found this video.  It’s definitely worth watching, let me know what you think in the comments or start chattin it up over in the forums.

When Sin Looks More Enjoyable Than God

Take Comfort

No matter how chaotic your life seems to be or what shocking events unfold throughout the world, take heart in knowing that God is in control.  It may not seem like it, feel like it, or look like it, but in the end God is still shaping and using the decisions and events of this world to fulfill His purpose.  In light of recent events at our Nation’s capital, I found comfort in Psalm 112:6-8.

“Surely the righteous will never be shaken; they will be remembered forever.  They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.  Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear; in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.”

This verse cries out trust the Lord.  As believers, we know how the story ends.  We know that in the end, God wins.  God’s righteousness cannot be overtaken and even in the midst of turmoil and chaos, He is all that we need.  Do not fear bad news, but instead set your heart on the Lord and take comfort in His word.  We serve a mighty God, and nothing is out of His control.

Passion 2010 – It is Always a Mistake To Decide What You Do Before You Decide Who You Want To Be

Tremble at His Word

As I was watching Francis Chan’s sermon at Passion 2010, God’s word hit me just as it hit Francis earlier in his life.  This verse in Isaiah really caused me to reflect on how I read, pray, and live day to day because it gave me a new perspective on God’s word.  Here’s the thing, I’ve always believed that the Bible was God-breathed (inspired by God), but I’ve never sat for a while in prayer and reflection on this topic.  I’ve never stood still in deep thought about what this essentially means!  I’m getting ahead of myself so let’s read the actual verse I’m talking about, if you’ve watched the video you probably know what I’m verse it is (or maybe you looked at the title of this post).  Open up to Isaiah 66:2 and take a look:

“‘Has not my hand made all these things, and so they came into being?’ declares the LORD. ‘This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word.’”

It’s good to have these gut checks because it causes you to reflect on your actions and thoughts.   I got to thinking about it and was dumbfounded at this obvious detail that we so often take for granted.  You are holding the very words of God in your hands when you read the Bible.  THE VERY WORDS OF GOD. I mean, just sit for 5 – 10 minutes and think about that.  The God who made the Heavens, the Earth and everything in it.  The bringer of life, love, and all that is good has given you his thoughts, character, and desires in a book form that came from His very mouth!  Does that not grab your attention!? It’s something I’ve taken for granted because I’ve heard that phrase so much (God’s word, God-breathed, inspired by God) that I’ve fallen into this numb-like state where this detail no longer grabs my attention….until now!

Francis talks about the end of this verse, how God esteems those who tremble at His word, and how he’s somehow lost that along the way.  It’s a humbling realization that every time we come before God we must acknowledge what exactly we are reading and TREMBLE at His word and and at that thought.  We can’t come before God with lukewarm intentions.

Think about it this way, if you wake up either not hungry or extremely worried about the rest of the day, odds are you might not eat a good breakfast.  You may grab a quick snack on the way to work, but you could probably hold off for a while, I mean why not….there are more pressing matters like getting to work on time or figuring out how you are going to solve the day’s problems.  On the other hand, if you are famished for days and have grown incredibly weak and thin and someone brings you to a table where a feast is laid before you, you are going to cherish that meal and feast on what is before you.  You are going to be so thankful for this meal that more than likely you will stand in awe of what’s been given to you.

So many times we come before the Lord to snack on His word.  It’s time to have a feast and stand in awe of what’s been given to you.  You have the Bible; God’s very words, cherish that.
